What is ergonomics and why should we study it?

That is a fair question and requires an honest answer. Simply put, we need to study ergonomics in order to be able to design our systems, processes, equipment and facilities in a way that is best suited for the human body, to reduce injuries and allow our staff to perform at the levels required by tight competition.

By better design and layout we enable our staff to do their jobs faster, more accurately, and safer. By providing them a better workplace design, we will also gain lower scrap rates, less rework, greater uptime, and more. All this has another benefit: LOWER COSTS, which means being able to compete, and make a profit.

What does this presentation teach or achieve:

• A general awareness of ergonomics
• To provide examples of how ergonomics is integrated with Lean and Six Sigma projects
• To provide additional information for project team training
• To serve as an additional reference guide for teams working on process improvement
